Dirt Road Biking in Vermont

The Moosalamoo National Recreation Area

The Green Mountain National Forest’s Moosalamoo National Recreation Area offers a wide range of unpaved terrain — old logging roads, gravel carriage roads, abandoned ancient town byways, and mixed-use trails. In general, the mountain biking available would be described as beginner (dirt roads) to intermediate-level (mixed-use hiking/mtb trails), not advanced, technical riding, though recent trail work in the National Forest has opened up some segments of true single-track (like the Chandler Ridge) for a more adventurous off-road mountain biking experience.  You can choose to spend your Vermont vacation on the dirt, or combine mountain biking with road riding.

The mountain biking season runs from late May through about the third week of October.  The only 2019 dates we will not be able to book you at any inn in our network are Friday and Saturday, May 25 & 26; Friday and Saturday, September 27 & 28; and Friday and Saturday October 11 & 12.  These are the local college event weekends, and the inns are not able to facilitate the inn to inn program because of those two events.

Accommodations at three unique country inns, including multi-course candlelit dinners and full hearty breakfasts, round out the package.  Our mountain biking package in Moosalamoo includes some wandering each day to extend the 10 or so miles of actual distance between your overnight accommodations.  You may customize this package from two to four nights, staying at The Brandon Inn, Blueberry Hill, and Chipman Inn.  The mountain biking package includes dinner, overnight (private bath, non-smoking inns), full served breakfast, brown-bag trail lunch to take with you, detailed maps (but not cue sheets), innkeeper assistance to advance your car and luggage each morning before you bike, and all meals and rooms taxes (9% or 10% depending on the village) and required housekeeping and waitstaff gratuities.  Note that some nights, Brandon Inn is not serving dinner in-house, but one of Vermont’s top restaurants is a two-minute sidewalk stroll from the inn, and a reduction in rate of $40 per person is made.  Dinner in that case is on your own / off package / out of pocket, but the other package components are included.  High-quality mountain bikes are available for rental at $35 per bike per day, delivered to your inn (rental bikes are not included in the pricing below).
