The Touring Cat – Winter 2019

The Ultimate in Flexibility!

Our more popular winter itinerary, this is a modification of our original Vermont Catamount Excursion, emphasizing the use of well-marked, mapped, maintained, and groomed touring center trails of varying levels of difficulty, optionally spiced with moderate backcountry skiing if you so desire.  We have chosen these Vermont Nordic centers for truly scenic and peaceful settings;  always nearby are the Catamount Trail and other ungroomed trails in Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest for even more variety, including recently-opened “glade skiing” opportunities.  Because each touring center offers easy, intermediate, and advanced trails, the Touring Cat is suitable and enjoyable for skiers of all ability levels.

Each day on the Vermont Touring Cat Package includes:  afternoon arrival at a cozy country inn; relaxed Old World-style served dinner; overnight classic inn accommodations with private bath (Queen room or room with two beds – your choice; non-smoking inns); full served country breakfast each morning; skier’s brown-bag trail lunch to take with you; day pass to touring center indicated; Vermont meals and rooms tax, and housekeeping and waitstaff gratuities.  Out-of-pocket expenses:  alcohol and any optional rental equipment (skis/snowshoes are available on a daily-rental basis at all five touring centers) or lessons at the ski centers.  On the Touring Cat, you have a short drive after breakfast to the touring center, ski the designated touring center during the day, and after your ski, a short drive to your next inn to relax before dinner.  So you need a car for the Touring Cat.

Sunday nights are at Mountain View Inn in Fayston and include a day pass for Monday to Ole’s Cross Country Center (45km trail network; groomed).  TRAIL MAP

Monday nights are at Chipman Inn in Ripton and include a day pass for Tuesday to Rikert Nordic Center (55km trail network; groomed; 5km snowmaking).  TRAIL MAP   OPTIONAL in 2019:  You make take Tuesday as a “Wild Cat” day and ski the Moosalamoo National Recreation Area on the Catamount Trail to arrive at Blueberry Hill Inn on skis.  Trailhead shuttling from the Chipman Inn innkeeper in the morning would be in place of the day pass to the Rikert touring center.

Tuesday nights are at Blueberry Hill Inn in Goshen and include a day pass for Wednesday to their onsite ski touring center (50km trail network, entirely ungroomed/backcountry).  TRAIL MAP

Wednesday nights are at Mountain Top Inn in Chittenden and include a day pass for Thursday to their onsite Mountain Top Nordic Center (60 km [40 km groomed] trail network; 2.5 km snowmaking).  TRAIL MAP

The Touring Cat is offered in January and February only, Sunday through Wednesday nights.  Itineraries may be customized to fit both the dates you would like and the room availability at the inns.
